Louisville vs Scioto Valley - September 8,2007

Congratulations to the team on another solid victory.  With two games in the books, we are at the head of the point’s table not only in the Southern League, but also the DII Eastern Conference.  With two victories and bonus points (for scoring 4 tries) in both games, we have achieved the maximum total of 10 points.  Great job.

League schedules and results can be viewed at www.midwestrugby.com.  Now we will see how we do on road in what I expect to be our hardest match yet, at Indianapolis.

We will return to our regular Tue/Thur. Practice schedule this week, and we need to keep working hard to improve.  Let’s not relax now waste our good start by being satisfied we’ve won a couple at home, but rather keep pushing to win the league and be at home for an opening round playoff match.  While we have won both our matches, I feel we have a lot of room for improvement.  We added a couple of wrinkles to our pattern this past week that paid dividends in the game, and we need to continue to improve and expand our attacking and defensive schemes.

For the weekend, shout-outs go to Noel who played well in his first start with the club, and Paul who dotted two tries and nearly had a third.  (Paul, you go to the front of the line in our pick-up drills next week!)  Paul got serious consideration for Man of the Match honors (and isn’t it nice to be talking about how well our wingers played), but instead this weeks MOM goes to the Louisville “Tight Five”, who set the tone with some physical play and exerted tremendous pressure in all the set pieces.  (Particularly Tyson, who moved from the back row to the cage due to some personnel issues.) Last year we struggled in the set pieces against the better teams and had to play a lot of rugby off the back foot.  So far this year, we are solid up front which gives our backs and flankers a solid platform for attack, and we are forcing mistakes by the opposition with our pressure in the scrums and line-outs.  That’s good rugby.
